Intro
So we got a house with a heat pump, all fine and dandy. I had never had this kind of technology at home, so I knew nothing about it... Then you start using it every day, and you begin to understand how it works and what its behaviour means when you are taking a shower.
At some point in the day you may be in the shower when suddenly COLD WATER gushes down... The hot water tank didn't have time to refill, so the temperature starts to drop. Depending on the shower head in use, the speed at which the heat pump can warm the water may not keep up with how fast the water is being used.
So we learned the tricks, the do's and don'ts. But however well you organise your daily life to use the heat pump the "correct" way, some information will still be missing.
NIBE, the manufacturer of our heat pump, does a good job with the equipment but a very poor job with the user experience. I guess the architecture of the house doesn't take the user into consideration either, as it makes a bad choice on the position of the control.
The problem that needs a solution
When you are getting ready for a shower, you may walk from the living room or the kitchen upstairs and, on the way, glance at the digital display, which gives you some information:
However, taking that peek is not something you will always remember. After all, you want to take a shower; you are not thinking about the details of the system, you want hot water. So when you are already in the shower, or you reach the bathroom by a route that skips the digital display, you still need to know the status of the heat pump.
To solve this, I started a multi-part project (Update: finished in Nov/2026). As I write this I am on the third phase, with one last part still to finish.
The phases
The first phase is to build a way to read information from the heat pump. For that I could use the NIBE developer website: once the heat pump is connected to the internet, I can use their API to read its data.
So I first developed a reader in Golang, which also gives detailed information about the data it extracts from the heat pump.
After this introduction you will find the README from the repository, which I have made public.

This and the other phases are described in blog entries linked here:
- Part 1: Build a NIBE API reader that uses the myUplink developer website, collects information about the heat pump and shows it on a simple LCD (this blog entry);
- Part 2: Use a script on a Raspberry Pi in the bathroom to show the information on a TFT screen (which also meant soldering the TFT and designing a 3D-printed STL lid for the RPi + TFT);
- Part 3: The most daring and final part: add a humidity sensor and set up an 868 MHz radio transmitter to turn on the ventilation on demand, automatically.
SWOT, the first display (phases 1 and 2)
This is what Part 1 ended up driving: SWOT, a Raspberry Pi with a character LCD in a 3D-printed case, cycling through the heat pump's numbers: water temperature, comfort mode, the reader's own health, and how old the data is.
nibe-reader
Go service that polls the myUplink API for NIBE heat pump data and writes it to local JSON files.
What it does
- Authenticates with myUplink using OAuth2 client credentials
- Fetches all device data points every minute (configurable)
- Saves points as JSON to
logs/points_<systemID>_<deviceID>.json, overwriting on each poll - Saves system/device info once at startup to
logs/systems.json - Renews the auth token every 55 minutes (configurable)

- A myUplink developer account with a registered application (client credentials flow)
Register at dev.myuplink.com to get a client ID and secret.
